Sharon Aikenhead Waugh Memorial Scholarship
Sharon Aikenhead was born in Calgary, Alberta on October 25, 1939, the daughter of Douglas and Madge Aikenhead. She attended the Hanna and Stettler elementary schools and, after moving to Calgary in 1950, Balmoral Junior High School and Crescent Heights High School. During her studies in the Faculty of Education (now the Werklund School of Education) at the University of Alberta in Calgary (now the University of Calgary) she won the Olive M. Fisher Award for excellence in practice teaching. She began her teaching career in Calgary in 1959 teaching in several elementary schools. After her untimely death July 14, 1968, the Calgary and District Council of the International Reading Association decided to honour her through the presentation of an award. In 1976 Sharon’s parents established a trust fund at the University of Calgary. The award was first presented in 1977 and continues to acknowledge Sharon’s contribution to the teaching profession and her involvement in professional organizations
